A Handy Guide to Solving Dishwasher Problems

Nov 22, 2019

The dishwasher is one of the most important appliances in your home—it is convenient, efficient and fast. But like any machine, if it is not well-kept and well-maintained, it will eventually create expensive problems. To help you tackle any dishwasher difficulties before they become worse, the pros at Manzo Plumbing have created a handy guide to solving dishwasher problems!

If the dishes come out of a cleaning cycle still covered in food scraps or grease, that could be because of several things. Make sure your detergent is strong enough to handle the gunk on your dishes and utensils. If your detergent is fine, the problem might lie in the sprayer arms. The sprayer arms are located at the bottom of the dishwasher (sometimes the top) and spray hot water at a high pressure to clean dishes and utensils. You might either be dealing with low pressure water from the sprayer arm, buildup of food, or a utensil stuck between the arms. After making sure there is no utensil blocking the arms and the water pressure is fine, use a toothbrush to clean out the sprayer arms and remove any food buildup.

Pro tip: To make sure your dishwasher cleans effectively, properly load your dishwasher and use the right cycle.

If there are any particularly bad odors coming from the dishwasher, it is most likely because of food build up in the sprayer arms and the dishwasher filter. To prevent excess odor, clean out your dishwasher filter every month or so. Use your owner’s manual to find out what kind of filter your dishwasher has and how you can clean it out. If your dishwasher is manual, you will have to remove the filter and wash it. To locate the filter, look underneath the lower sprayer arm. In some models, you will see a flat component of the filter as well as a cylindrical one. Be sure to remove both and clean them with warm water.

To clean up any buildup in the dishwasher and on its gaskets, use vinegar. To do this, simply place a dishwasher-safe container containing a cup of vinegar on any of the racks in the dishwasher. Then run the dishwasher on a hot water cycle to disinfect and cleanse your dishwasher.

Dishwasher leaks can be caused by cracks in pipes or in the gasket around the dishwasher door. To prevent leaks that cause unnecessary water wastage, be sure to replace the gasket with a new one. If the gasket isn’t the problem, have a plumber you trust inspect the pipes for cracks or loose fittings.
