Make Guests Happy with A Tankless Water Heater

Dec 13, 2019

Tankless water heaters have become popular over time because of their slightly different way of heating water. They are considered “on-demand” water heaters—instead of stored water constantly being heated (as it is with standard water heaters), tankless water heaters provide hot water only when it is needed. This makes a tankless water heater an energy-efficient option in addition to being durable and long-lasting.

If you have been considering using a tankless water heater for some time, consider getting it over the holidays! These water heaters will provide the water heating you and your guests need to keep you warm during the winter season. To learn more, keep reading this guide by the pros at Manzo Plumbing.

How Does a Tankless Water Heater Work?

If you’re still a little confused about how a tankless water heater works, you’re in the right place. As we mentioned before, standard water heaters have storage tanks in which water is constantly being heated. But tankless water heaters directly heat water. When you turn on the hot water handle of a faucet, water goes into the tank and is heated with the help of either electric coils or a gas burner (depending on the type of tankless water heater you choose).

The Pros

Tankless heaters offer several benefits:

Tankless heaters have a life expectancy of 20+ years while standard water heaters have a life expectancy of 10-15 years.

While storage tanks can run out of hot water fairly quickly depending on usage, tankless designs provide as much as you need – whenever you need it. With these direct heating properties, you are less likely to run out of hot water.

Tankless heaters are smaller than other storage water heaters and can even be installed on your walls. They are 23 inches in length, 20 inches wide and 10 inches deep.

The most significant benefit of a tankless design is its energy-efficient quality. With storage water heaters, a phenomenon called “standby heat loss” occurs. With the storage tank constantly heating water, even when it is not needed or not in use, there will be waste in energy. Tankless water heaters on the other hand can be up 34 % more energy-efficient than storage water heaters.

The Cons

Unfortunately, with every appliance, there are also some drawbacks. To give you the full picture, here are some cons of purchasing a tankless design:

Depending how much hot water you use, you can save up to $100 using a tankless design because of how energy-efficient it is. However, it also has a significantly higher up-front cost than a storage water heater. So, you will need to consider if the energy-efficient factor is worth making the expensive switch to a tankless water heater.

If you are using several faucets or appliances at the same time, there is only so much hot water your tankless water heater can supply. If you use hot water frequently, there is a chance your tankless design might be stretched thin.
