New Year Plumbing Resolutions

Jan 03, 2020

If you want to make significant changes to your home appliances and systems, the new year is the perfect time to do so. When it comes to your home’s plumbing, you can kick the new year (and decade) off with a clean garbage disposal, a leak-free faucet or a new showerhead—the possibilities are endless. And to help you out, the pros at Manzo Plumbing are here to suggest some new year plumbing resolutions, so you can spend 2020 free of annoying plumbing problems!

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the average household can account for 10,000 gallons of water lost every year. In 2020, put a stop to the leaks once and for all. Here are some common places where leaks occur:

There can be several reasons for a toilet leak, but the most common one is usually a worn-out flapper. The flapper is the seal between the toilet tank and bowl. When you pull the flush lever, the seal lifts up and water flows into the bowl from the tank. But if your flapper is worn out, water continues to leak through any cracks in the flapper long after you have flushed. Luckily, this problem has an easy fix. All you need to do is find a replacement for the flapper in your nearest home improvement store.

If your showerhead is leaking, it’s probably because it isn’t properly secured to the shower stem. Tighten the showerhead and for extra security, add Teflon tape in the area where the showerhead is attached to the stem.

A leaky faucet is often caused by a deteriorated washer, O-ring or gasket. The best way to fix this problem is to replace these components, but be sure to know the brand of your faucet before you look for a replacement.

Start the new year off by cleaning up your garbage disposal. Pour a mixture of baking soda and vinegar in the disposal, let it sit for 5 minutes then follow it up with cold running water. In addition, make sure you refrain from putting items such as grease, large animal bones, coffee grounds and eggshells down the disposal.

Prevent your drains from clogging up in 2020 by refraining from putting items down the drain that do not belong there. That means the items we mentioned above, as well as flushable wipes (they don’t break down as easily as toilet paper), certain chemicals, hygiene products etc. If you find that certain drains around your home are clogged, you can use Drano, a plunger or a trusty drain snake. You can also fashion a hook-snake hybrid using a wire hanger—the possibilities are endless.
