4 Reasons Your Toilet Isn’t Working

Sep 27, 2019

For serving such a simple purpose, toilets have a lot of connections and moving parts that can easily break or malfunction. They all work like they’re supposed to – usually, but every now and then something goes wrong and suddenly you’re in a pickle. What’s going on? Thankfully, toilet issues can mostly be whittled down to a handful of different things. Thanks to the plumbing experts here at Sal Manzo Plumbing and Heating , you can get a better idea of why your toilet isn’t working.

The Water Supply is Blocked

When you notice that your toilet is filling slower than it normally does, the culprit usually involves the water supply. It might be turned a little too tightly – in which case all you’ll need to do is turn the valve a bit to open it up – or it could be because the supply itself is clogged.

Hard water, or water that has lots of minerals and sediment in it, can leave behind deposits that eventually clog the water supply itself. If you think this might be troubling your toilet, switch the water supply off and clean out the tube. Otherwise, give a trusted plumber a call!

Flapper Needs to Be Replaced

Your toilet can deal with a number of different refilling-related issues, including an inconsistent fill rate. If, after flushing your toilet, you notice that it’s still running or not refilling the way it should be, check the rubber flapper in the tank.

The flapper eventually deteriorates and breaks down, and it needs to be replaced once that happens. Not only will the annoying habit of a running toilet stop, but you’ll save on water bills to boot!

Flush Holes Are Clogged

Another bowl-adjacent problem is when it just won’t refill at all! The tiny holes near the middle of your toilet bowl are there to route water back to the bowl after you flush, and if those get clogged with sediment and other deposits, then it won’t fill like it is designed to.

You’ll probably need a mirror to see if they are clogged or not since the flush holes face away from you. If they are clogged after all, use something small like a wire clothes hanger to clean them out. If that doesn’t solve the issue, though, let us know.

Your Handle Won’t Move

Flush handles aren’t supposed to involve much effort. If you’re encountering some resistance when you push them down, chances are they’ve gotten corroded or stuck. Thankfully they’re not difficult to remove – just unscrew the nut securing the handle from the inside of the tank and replace it.
